Bookstore Position Descriptions

**At this time, we are not actively filling positions.  However, interested persons may submit a resume and letter of interest to have on file and should positions open, we will look to materials we have been sent to see if there are applicants in that pool who would be a good fit for an interview. If applicant is new to the workforce, resume and letter of interest can speak to volunteer, internship, and school-based experience and projects in addition to or in lieu of paid experience. **

Bookseller (Part-Time/Seasonal) - We are not actively seeking to fill this position. 

Part-time Booksellers support the day-to-day happenings of the bookstore by successfully performing customer service and retail activities.  This position will not move to full time hours, but any Bookseller currently on the team could apply for a full time position on the team should one become available in the future.

This Bookseller position will be scheduled, primarily, for afternoon and evening shifts, with additional, variable hours throughout the rest of the week as needed and available.  This is not a remote position.  Applicants must possess experience in sales and customer service, a drive and internal motivation that would allow them to meet sales goals, initiative, and a passion for stories. Starting pay is $9-12/hour based on experience.  The bookstore is striving to move all team members towards a living wage as quickly as possible. The position will remain open until the ideal candidate is found.  

A Bookseller will have responsibilities in the following areas: 

Day-to-Day Bookstore Operations

  • Day-to-day tasks to successfully operate the bookstore including, but not limited to, stocking shelves, processing inventory (must be able to lift/carry boxes of books around store), assisting customers with finding books, making book recommendations, operating POS system, accurately taking and processing special orders, maintaining merchandise displays; 
  • Assist Owner or Assistant Bookstore Manager to successfully close and lock up bookstore in the evenings as scheduled; 
  • Assist Owner or Assistant Bookstore Manager with bookstore events and programming throughout the year; and 
  • Provide exemplary and efficient service to shoppers while remaining customer- and community-focused.

Book/Book World Knowledge

  • Maintain familiarity with a diverse genre of books including classics and new releases and
  • Stay informed on publishing trends, industry best practices, and the pulse of our local community.

Minimum Expectations - All individuals who are Adventure Bound Books team members are expected to: 

  • Support and nurture the safe space that Adventure Bound Books strives to be in our community, meaning that individuals who are part of our team will honor, respect, and love others regardless of race, gender, religion, country of origin, beliefs, sexual orientation, age, or other characteristics. Tolerance is not sufficient.
  • Possess an understanding of the role and importance of independently owned businesses in a local community and a willingness to educate the community within this framework. 
  • Represent the bookstore in a positive and uplifting manner in person and virtually to all stakeholders and potential stakeholders including, but not limited to, authors, publishers, educators, librarians, readers, volunteers, community leaders, and community partners.
  • Approach the position as more than a paycheck and as more than a discount on books, being invested in the mission and vision of Adventure Bound Books and its role in our community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Adventure Bound Books and personal experience with the bookstore;
  • Understanding of the role independently owned businesses play in local communities;
  • Earned High School diploma*;
  • Working knowledge of Zoom, Crowdcast, YouTube, Facebook and/or Instagram Live platforms;
  • Experience in customer service and sales positions;
  • Knowledge of schools, libraries, and community resources within the Burke, McDowell, Caldwell, and Catawba County areas;
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills; 
  • Problem solving skills including the ability to make decisions when given independence to do so and propose solutions to challenges that arise; 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction on autonomous tasks as well as the ability to work well with a team on group projects; 
  • Confidence in your self and your work; 
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and learn from mistakes in order to achieve personal growth; 
  • Widely and diversely read; 
  • A genuine appreciation for readers and for connecting readers with stories; and
  • Patience and a tolerance for the unknown, as this is a new position that could grow over time. 

*Candidates who are still in high school, who demonstrate strong communication skills, high potential for achievement, a capacity to learn quickly, and previous experience may be considered for this position prior to complete of high school diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Earned Associate’s degree or at least one year of college-level coursework completed; 
  • Working knowledge of American Sign Language; 
  • Bi-lingual - English and Spanish;
  • 1+ years of successful experience with/in/at a local, independently owned business;
  • 1+ years of successful experience in customer service positions; 
  • 1+ years of successful experience in sales positions; 
  • Demonstrated book-world knowledge (for example, a base-line understanding of the publishing world, wholesale world, bookselling world, or experience as a librarian), or
  • A satisfactory combination of the qualifications listed above.

Bookstore Page (Part-Time) - We are not actively seeking to fill this position. 

Adventure Bound Books (ABB) is seeking to hire one or more Pages to support the day-to-day activities of the bookstore.  This is an entry-level, variable hour-per-week, part-time position with the potential to grow into a Bookseller position upon demonstration of exemplary performance and as the bookstore needs grow. Compensation begins at $8-10/hour depending on prior experience.  We need individuals who are available for shifts in the afternoons throughout the week.  If some tasks, but not all, match with your interests, please consider applying.  We will offer opportunities for you to use current skills and develop additional skills in areas of interest to you. 

Bookstore Pages will have responsibilities in the following areas: 

Day-to-Day Bookstore Operations 

Day-to-day tasks to successfully operate the bookstore including, but not limited to: 

  • Stock shelves, 
  • Process inventory (must be able to lift/carry boxes of books around store), 
  • Maintain merchandise displays (straightening books and displays, moving and redesigning displays as needed), and
  • Manage recycling (break down boxes).

Marketing and Promotions

  • Create marketing and promotion materials in collaboration with the bookselling team, to  include flyers, brochures, sticker and button designs, and more, 
  • Design templates for social media posts, and
  • Assist in distributing promotional materials around town. 

Social Media Support

  • Take the lead on specific social media platforms as needed (such as Discord), and 
  • Assist in creating content for YouTube, Instagram Reels, and other platforms to promote the bookstore, our products, and events. 

Customer Service

As they become more comfortable in their role, Pages may:

  • Assist customers with finding books and
  • Make book recommendations to shoppers. 

Book/Book World Knowledge 

All team members at Adventure Bound Books are expected to maintain familiarity with a diverse genre of books and to stay informed on publishing trends, industry best practices, and the pulse of our local community as appropriate for their bookstore responsibilities.

  • Previous experience in retail positions (paid or volunteer); 
  • Previous experience in managing projects (school-based or community-based); 
  • Working knowledge of American Sign Language; and/or 
  • Conversational Spanish.
